Prof. Levent Alimgil, M.D., head of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmologic Surgery at Istanbul Cerrahi Hospital, gave statements on smart intraocular lens applications, which will spare patients from near vision prescription glasses as well as distant prescription glasses after cataract surgery.

We have been successfully performing cataract surgeries for long years. It drastically increases visual quality and quality of life. The eye is incised approximately 2 mm in size within scope of the surgical method; the opacified lens is cleaned and a new lens is placed. It is an extremely comfortable and reliable surgery performed under local anesthesia, lasting 10 to 12 minutes.

The main problem is about the patient’s visual quality because the entire process is related to the lens placed in the eye. The lens should be selected accordingly if the patient has astigmatic refraction problem and toric lens with appropriate features should be placed. It is important to provide a healthy distant visual capacity without correction using such applications. But the patients still have to use near prescription glasses.

"Smart intraocular lenses” are developed to eliminate this problem. We are handed an opportunity for near perfect vision for the first time with trifocal intraocular lens technology. The patients, who are applied the intraocular lenses, gain distant-middle and near vision without prescription glasses.

Patients with history of single focus lens who use near vision prescription glasses pose a serious problem at this stage. I would like to stress that those patients haven’t missed the opportunity in light to new developments in the intraocular lens technology. Obtaining advantages of trifocal (smart) intraocular lens is possible by placing the new lens in front of the previously placed intraocular lens. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and lasts maximum of 7 to 10 minutes.
