POLYSOMNOGRAPHY (PSG) (SLEEP APNEA TEST)

Sleep apnea test is the most significant stage of diagnosing and treating the condition. “Polysomnography”, which is a sleep apnea test, records all brain activities and respiratory events throughout the night.

Polysomnography is based on the measurement of brain waves, eye movements, airflow through the mouth and nose, snoring, heart rate, leg movements and oxygen saturations during sleep. Patient’s need to stay at the sleep room for a night to undergo the sleep apnea test. Signals obtained through cables that are attached to various points on the body are transmitted to the computer outside the room. With the evaluation of these signals that were recorded till the next morning, many parameters can be analyzed, including the number of times breathing stopped, how long it has stopped, how oxygen values and heart rate got affected from these stops and whether you achieved deep sleep or not.

Parkinson’s Disease
It is a neurological disease that develops due to deficiency of a chemical substance, also known as dopamine, which plays an important role in regulating movements of body. This insidious and slowly progressing disease is generally seen in people who are ≥ 50 years old. It is manifested by symptoms such as slowing of movements, tremor in hands, difficulty in moving, anterior bending of the body and total or partial loss of facial expression. Diagnosis is made with neurological examination. It requires a long-term medication therapy. It is possible to treat the patient and keep the quality of life at a certain level for years with a proper treatment and regular follow-up.

Alzheimer’s Disease
It is a disease that develops generally in people at or above 60 and leads to impairment of cognitive and social skills and daily functioning secondary to idiopathic pathologies in healthy brain tissue. Incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is around 10% at the age of 60. Incidence increases to 50% at age of 80. Primary symptoms of the disease are difficulty writing and speaking, difficulty finding proper words, difficulty focusing and time and location confusions as well as impaired memory that may influence daily life. Although there is no cure, some medications and behavioral therapies are used for increasing quality of life and coping with psychological problems at early stage.
