Dealing with diagnosis and management of diseases in esophagus, stomach, colon, liver and pancreas, Gastroenterology Clinic of Istanbul Cerrahi Hospital successfully performs endoscopy, colonoscopy and esophagoscopy, gastroscopy and ERCP.

Endoscopy is performed to investigate chronic and disturbing complaints arising out of esophagus, stomach and duodenum and to make a final diagnosis after biopsy specimen is taken, if required, and microscopic examinations are made.

The procedure enables one to take specimen to explore the bacteria known as Helicobacter Pylori in stomach, excise and extirpate gastric polyps and perform sclerotherapy for gastric bleeding at appropriate conditions.

Endoscopy is a 15-minute procedure, which is performed by Gastroenterologists of Istanbul Cerrahi Hospital in cooperation with anesthesiologists.

Colonoscopy, a diagnostic method that aims imaging small intestine and colon after duodenum, ensures early diagnosis of several life-threatening diseases, particularly colon cancer.

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are quite useful for several gastrointestinal diseases that cannot be diagnosed definitely with imaging modalities such as Ultrasonography, MRI and Computed Tomography. Colonoscopy is recommended for everybody after the age of 50 at certain intervals as advised by the physician even if subject has no complaint.

In colonoscopy, a flexible hose (in thickness of little finger) with a microcamera on the tip is inserted to anal canal to evaluate and explore colon. The physician can observe and examine in detail the interior surface of colon thanks to this system. It is necessary to clean and make lumen of colon empty as it is necessary to, possible maximum extent, to make colon appropriate for the procedure. There are diet limitations and a stage of preparation that should be started 2 days beforehand. The colonoscopy procedure lasts for approximately 15 minutes and the patients can resume daily life activities immediately after the procedure.

Patients are not given anesthetic agent or in other words, they are not deeply slept during colonoscopy. Anesthesiologist induces sedation that implies a kind of “calming down”. Therefore, patients can resume daily life activities right after the procedure. However, it is recommended that patients strictly avoid driving or doing works, which require attention, for first several hours.

Gastroenterologists or General Surgeons will make final decision on whether ERCP is necessary or not. Therefore, they need some workups, such as blood tests, ultrasound or tomography along with findings of examinations. If ERCP is decided in the light of results, the procedure is carried out by the same specialist.

Endoscopic tube is inserted and advanced to duodenum and problems in liver, gall bladder, biliary tract and pancreatic canal are visualized with ERCP; thus, a diagnosis is made and therapeutic procedures are performed at the same session as long as it is possible.
